Lifesaving treatments for breast cancer come at a cost — many women experience hot flashes, fatigue, night sweats and more.

Now new research suggests that acupuncture may help ease some of these side effects, and it may be more effective than antidepressants for relieving hot flashes and more.

Acupuncture may be just as effective as conventional medicine when it comes to reducing hot flashes in breast cancer patients - and might also lead to increased sex drive and enhanced wellbeing. That's the finding of a recent study comparing the effects of Effexor (a medication commonly used to manage the side effects of breast cancer treatment) with those of acupuncture (a needle-based therapy long used in traditional Chinese medicine).

Findings also show there were additional benefits to acupuncture treatment for breast cancer patients, such as an increased sense of well being, more energy, and in some cases, a higher sex drive, that were not experienced in those patients who underwent drug treatment for their hot flashes.
